Understanding Kent’s Local Government Reorganisation
Kent’s Local Government Reorganisation will bring significant changes to the way local government works across the county. On this page, I explain what is changing, what the new West Kent Council will mean for Snodland, how local representation will work, and what these changes could mean for the services residents rely on.
What is local government reorganisation?
Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) is the process of replacing Kent’s existing two-tier system of local government with four new unitary councils.
At present, services in Snodland are split between Kent County Council and Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council. Under the new arrangements, these responsibilities will be brought together within a new West Kent Council, covering Sevenoaks, Tonbridge & Malling, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells.
For Snodland residents, this means a significant change to the way local services are organised and delivered. This page explains what is changing, what will stay the same, how the new West Kent Council will work, and what the changes could mean for our community.
Introducing the new West Kent Council
The new West Kent Council will bring together the areas currently covered by Sevenoaks District Council, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Maidstone Borough Council and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, creating a new unitary authority responsible for a wide range of local government services.
For Snodland, this means moving from the current two-tier system, where responsibilities are shared between Kent County Council and Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, to a single unitary council.
This section looks at the areas that will make up West Kent, the proposed ward boundaries and arrangements for councillor representation, and the services that will transfer to the new authority. It will also explain what these changes could mean in practical terms for residents, communities and local services in Snodland.
